About DIGITALMASTERS australasia and our history...

The Beginning...

In 1977 David Henry-Myers started his first business, 'Photographis' providing 'CibaChrome' exhibition print services. The stunning colour and longevity of the media was immediately appreciated by commercial and fine art photographers alike. We developed conrast masking processes, border printing effects and graphic overlays that had some of the world's top photographers banging on our door. Many of these traditional methods are still used by us in the digital domain.

The 'DMA' Story...

The first 'DMA' opened in 1982 as ‘David Myers and Associates’ providing scientific photography, lab & illustration services. We first got involved in digital imaging developing a photo imaging solution for the University of Sydney’s 3D modeling mainframe computer in 1984 We opened Australia's first Digital Photo Imaging Bureau at North Sydney in 1987, became Kodak Australasia’s first Pro Digital Imaging Reseller in 1991 and Fuji’s in 1993. We launched the first digital photo studio with Kodak pro digital SLRs and Dicomed scanning cameras in 1992. We installed the first two Kodak Pro Photo CD systems in 1993 and opened another ‘DMA’ - Digital Masters Australasia...

Digital Masters Australasia utilised Australia's only $400,000 dual Kodak Pro Photo CD system. Along with other high-end film & print scanners & custom built digital reprography (copy) systems we are able to provide the best, most cost-effective scanning and digitisation services in Australia. When a photograph or piece of art is digitised to the maximum tonal and colour range of 48bits, optimised, colour matched and retouched to perfection you have a ‘Digital Master’ file. That concept was established here in Australia by us as early as the introduction of the first 'photographic colour' Macintosh that we bought in 1987!

Retouching & Photo Restoration services are performed by experienced, mature digital artists with traditional airbrush skills. All our Mac, Windows and UNIX computers run high quality pre-press monitors calibrated with Gretag MacBeth systems. We use Wacom graphics tablets and everything we do is ICC colour profiled from scanners, through digital cameras to our 44 inch archival Giclee printers. More Info

Artwork Digitisation is performed in our studio with horizontal table and vertical easel rigs. High powered Soft-box daylight lighting systems are used to minimise texture shadows and minimise reflections with additional lights to create '3D' relief effects if required on subjects like collages and montages. A 4" x 5" technical camera is used with the finest Schneider Apochromatic planar, distortion free lenses and the images are captured with a 384 MegaPixel Betterlight scanning back - more that 10 times the resolution of the 36Mp digital SLR cameras that are used by pro photographers! Large Format Archival Giclee Printing is performed by David Myers personally - a UK 'Fine Art Trade Guild' certified printer. Every image received is individually assessed and can be optimised (if the client wishes), at no charge, to produce the best print tonality, colour, saturation and sharpness. If required additional retouching can be performed (by quote). The images are then used to create layouts with print borders for presentation and framing with space for a title, signature and edition number. All stages of production are proffed online for the client to approve or advise of required changes. Prints are then produced with archival oil pigments on a range of PH neutral, non optical brightened substrates: Fine art cotton rag vellums, exhibition photo papers, metallic papers and mirror gloss white pearlescent films (like the old CibaChrome media). Printing is via the traditional 'proof strip - check - adjust image to perfection - make final print' routine for the best possible results! More Info

Large Format Archival Giclee Canvas Printing. Everything above applies to our large format oil pigment prints on heavy artists' canvas but we add additional borders to the layout to wrap the canvas around a kiln dried wood stretcher frame and the front face of the canvas and the borders can be customised with a range of display options. We also coat the canvases with five coats of UV/abrasion protective lacquer mainly to protect from any dust and scratch damage when hung. If you cant collect framed canvases we can economically ship canvases rolled so that you can use local framing services. More Info
